Amma Birth Companions supports vulnerable women who are facing
significant adversity on their journey towards motherhood. This includes mothers who are refugees, asylum seekers and living in poverty. Amma’s birth and mother companions support women before, during and after birth, providing trauma-informed emotional and practical support. Currently operating in Glasgow—with the aim to expand across the Greater Clyde area—Amma’s service is intended to support the wellbeing and life chances of both mothers and infants.
“The support funded by SOCAS significantly improved survivors’ quality of life, including improved mental health, physical health and improved social connections, allowing survivors to start feeling more in control of their lives and learning to navigate their trauma.” These are the findings of an independent evaluation of the first three years of the Scottish Government
